Retainers are dental appliances used to maintain teeth alignment, particularly after orthodontic treatment such as braces. Wearing a retainer helps prevent teeth from shifting back to their original position, making them an essential part of post-orthodontic care.

When Retainers Are Used

Retainers are most commonly used after braces are removed to maintain the new position of the teeth. Without a retainer, teeth may gradually shift back over time. For this reason, orthodontists often recommend wearing a retainer for several months to a year or longer, depending on individual treatment needs.

In some cases, retainers may also be used to make minor adjustments to tooth positioning. However, they are not intended for major corrections that require braces or other orthodontic treatments.

Patients may receive a retainer for the upper arch, lower arch, or both, depending on their treatment plan.

Types of Retainers

Bonded Retainers

Bonded retainers are permanent retainers made of wire that is attached to the back of the teeth. They are removed only by a dentist or orthodontist. These are often recommended for patients who may have difficulty following a removable retainer routine.

Hawley Retainers

Hawley retainers are removable devices made of a combination of wire and acrylic. They are durable, adjustable, and can last longer than other removable options. However, they may be more visible when worn.

Clear Acrylic Retainers

Clear acrylic retainers are removable and virtually invisible. They are custom-made to fit over a mould of your teeth and must be worn consistently to maintain alignment. These retainers typically need to be replaced more frequently, often about once a year.
