Comprehensive Oral & New Patient Exam

When you visit a dental practice for the first time, your dentist will perform a new patient exam to assess your oral and overall health. Comprehensive oral exams ensure your dentist can meet your specific needs and provide effective preventative care.

Why Oral Health Screening Is Essential

Preventative care is a top priority in dentistry. Even if your teeth feel fine and look great, having a dental exam at least once a year is essential for monitoring your oral health. Early diagnosis often allows for more treatment options and better outcomes.

What to Expect from Your First Visit

What is included in a new patient exam or comprehensive dental exam may vary depending on your dentist. However, most exams typically include:
  • A full medical history, including previous dental care
  • Comprehensive X-rays
  • An examination of the teeth, gums, and jaw
Your dentist will look for any abnormalities, including cracks, chips, cavities, wear, staining, loose teeth, gum recession, and irregularities in the soft tissue. Your dentist will also conduct an oral cancer screening through a soft tissue exam. They may ask about risk factors (such as smoking) and check for any unusual lumps in your mouth, jaw, or lymph nodes. Once your exam is complete, your dentist will review the findings with you. This may include any new concerns, a recommended treatment plan, at-home care advice, and preventative measures to help you maintain excellent oral health.
